The Vanguard Orchestra
(1996 - present)
After
seven years as pianist/composer/arranger
with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (later
the Mel Lewis & the Jazz Orchestra), Jim McNeely
left the band that called New York's Village
Vanguard jazz club home. In 1996, McNeely
returned to the group, then designated the Vanguard
Jazz Orchestra (VJO), as Composer-in-Residence.
In 1997, the group was granted 501(c)(3) non-profit status and began making educational appearances and expanding its performance schedule. Recent appearances McNeely has made with the VJO include those in:
